Ingredients

  • 2 lbs (about 900g) potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

  • 2 cups (480ml) heavy cream

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1 cup (120g) grated Gruyère or Swiss cheese (optional)

  • Butter for greasing the baking dish

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter.

  • Prepare the potatoes: Peel the potatoes and thinly slice them into rounds, about 1/8 inch thick. Pat the potato slices dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.

  • Make the cream mixture: In a saucepan, combine the heavy cream, minced garlic, ground nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it starts to simmer, then remove from heat.

  • Layer the potatoes: Arrange a layer of potato slices in the bottom of the prepared baking dish, slightly overlapping each other. Pour a portion of the cream mixture over the potatoes, ensuring they are evenly coated. Repeat the layers until all the potatoes and cream mixture are used, finishing with a layer of cream on top.

  • Bake the Dauphinoise Potatoes: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.

  • Optional cheese topping: If using grated cheese, remove the foil from the baking dish and sprinkle the cheese evenly over the top of the potatoes. Return the dish to the oven and bake, uncovered, for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
